Sustainable Products
More people are looking for sustainable products in Latin America
A study conducted by Mercado Libre shows a 27% growth in this market, totaling more than 2.7 million buyers in the last year

Growing concern over environmental issues and conscious consumption are driving a significant movement in Latin America: the demand for products with a positive impact. According to the 5th edition of the survey “Online Consumption Trends with Positive Impact”, conducted by Mercado Libre, the number of consumers of sustainable products grew by 27% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. This represents more than 2.7 million buyers who opted for more conscious choices, around 4% of total MELI buyers.
The study provides an overview of sustainable consumption habits in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay. One of the highlights is the fashion segment, which saw a significant increase of 92% in sales and 91% in the number of buyers compared to last year. Leading the trend were products made with recycled materials and sustainability certifications, with popular items including pants, socks, t-shirts, and pajamas.
To meet this demand, Mercado Libre continues to expand its range of options for consumers and now boasts the largest selection of positive-impact products in Latin America. Since last year, the platform has grown its sustainable product offerings by 13%, with over 38 thousand companies and entrepreneurs in the segment.
Consumer trends and preferences
The study showed that around 70% of respondents believe their consumption choices can positively influence the environment and communities. In addition, 9 out of 10 consumers expressed concern about critical issues such as global warming, water pollution and the scarcity of natural resources.
This concern is reflected in more sustainable purchasing habits, boosting sectors such as healthy eating, which grew by 8%. Sales of plant-based milks, for instance, surged, making them one of the top picks for consumers over the past year. Organic and locally sourced products are also gaining ground in conscious consumer choices, as are personal care items, which have seen a staggering 500% increase in sales.
More conscious choices
Another important trend revealed by the survey is consumers' focus on issues like the origin of materials and the composition of products. Half of those interviewed prioritize these factors when selecting sustainable items, opting for products that respect biodiversity and use recycled, organic or non-animal tested materials.
To meet this growing demand, Mercado Libre curates over 30 categories of positive-impact products, ranging from organic foods and personal care essentials to sustainable fashion and refurbished electronics. The platform also gives visibility to local entrepreneurs, strengthening the sustainable ecosystem in the region and making this type of consumption more accessible.
Our commitment is to support increasing numbers of people and entrepreneurs on the path to a more sustainable lifestyle. That's why we continue working to offer a wide range of products, giving visibility to those who are building a future with a greater positive impact
