For three years, Mercado Livre has been giving visibility to Latin American biodiversity products, supporting local income creation and environmental preservation.

Between September and October, Mercado Livre carried out another campaign to promote Latin American biodiversity products. With the motto Biomes in a click, the 2022 campaign brought together more than 1,000 items produced by businesses that contribute to the preservation and strengthening of Latin American biomes. More than 100 brands can be found on the campaign's page, which contributes to Mercado Livre's purpose of democratizing e-commerce and forms a significant part of the company's sustainability strategy.

Among the promoted products, over 53% are food, followed by craft products and beauty and decoration items. They are, for example, ceramic pieces made by artisans from Gran Chaco, Argentina, jam made from Victoria amazonica, a giant water lily, produced by communities in the Brazilian Amazon, and organic coffee produced by indigenous families from the Altos de Chiapas region, in Mexico.

“By strengthening commercial strategy and giving visibility to these businesses, we contribute to income generation as well as the conservation of socio-biodiversity in Latin American biomes”.

Entrepreneurship with impact + Biomas

Following success in Brazil - where it has partners such as Movimento Amazônia em Casa, Floresta em Pé, Idesam, AMAZ, Climate Ventures, Plataforma Parceiros pela Amazônia, Conexsus, Instituto Auá and Central do Cerrado - the campaign is being replicated in Argentina and Mexico in partnership with the Avina Foundation. Training throughout the region is carried out by professionals from Mercado Livre in partnership with Consultorial Giral.

Since 2020 Mercado Livre has been supporting socio-biodiversity businesses through the Empreender com Impacto + Biomas program. In all, over 120 brands have already gone through the training path receiving individual and collective mentoring in addition to gaining visibility on the platform as well as the other benefits that come with the Mercado Livre ecosystem.

“The Mercado Livre marketplace shortens the sales chain, democratizes access to electronic commerce and puts them on an equal footing within the market”.

Gabriela Sbarra and Florencia Iacopetti, from the Avina Foundation
